Getting around washington, d.c. — TIPS FROM THE HIGHROAD TEAM
Best Ways to Get Around the City
Walking
The most cost-effective way to get around the city! We are about a 35-45 minute walk to the downtown National Mall Area. We are a 20 minute walk from the Smithsonian National Zoo and within our neighborhood, there is lots to explore! We are not far from Rock Creek Park if you are looking for a fun trail for a light hike in the city.
Buses
We are near several bus lines. The 42/43 bus will get you close to the White House side of the National Mall. 42 bus (real time tracker at): https://buseta.wmata.com/#42 .The 96 bus can get you to Union Station / the Capitol Hill side of the mall! 96 tracker: https://buseta.wmata.com/#96. Regular bus is $2.00 per ride.
Metro Stations
Closest metro stations are Dupont Circle (Red Line) or U St (Yellow/Green Lines). If you want to ride the Metro (our subway) you must purchase a Smartrip card. You can purchase directly in your Apple / Google wallet or at a Metro Station at the Smartrip kiosks. They cost $10 and $8 will be loaded onto the card and ready to use.
More Smartrip Info: You can use them on buses and on the subway! Buses you can pay by exact cash or a Smartrip. Trains (Metro/Subways) you MUST have a Smartrip card.
The best and easiest way to pay for transit is to use the mobile pay features of your smartphone - see more info here: https://www.wmata.com/fares/MobilePay/
We typically do not recommend purchasing week passes unless you are planning to heavily use public transportation. Passes are typically best for locals doing alot of commuting. Once you purchase a pass or load your Smartrip, you cannot be refunded for the funds you did not use.
City Bikes / Scooters
Download the CapitalBikeShare.com app for bikes, or the Lyft.com/scooters for scooters and other bikes. Capital Bike bike docks are all around the city and make riding a bike for the day easy! We even have one on our street. These can be a fun and fast way to get around if you feel comfortable riding a bike or scooter in the city.
